  • Great app

I’m pretty old so I’ve had time to try a lot of language courses. I’ve tried Berlitz, Pimsleur, mango, and worked on the Internet a lot. But duo lingo is the only one that I find fun, productive and fun. When I first started I was the ticket for months. But six months laterI’m still doing it daily and enjoying it. It has really helped to improve my French. Five stars for dual lingo.

Great app for beginners. It’s not going to help you become fluent. Good for the basics. I really like it.
  • Placement Tests Are Way Off

Good app. Bad placements tests. I should be able to pass the highest level of Chinese here, no problem, but the mildly odd translations, formality, and extreme stringency won’t even let me get half way. For example, you can get a 10 word sentence correct but if one t is not crossed or I not dotted, the whole thing is wrong (even if acceptable in the real world). Also some of the English translations are mildly inaccurate which means you’ll probably get some questions wrong just because they are not right.

  • Best Language Learning App!

Duolingo has helped me so much with my Spanish! While my Spanish class has been the foundation of my learning, Duolingo has helped me brush up on the language and fix small errors. The app offers many lessons starting with the most basic vocabulary, all the way up to past tense rules. I'm even able to test out of levels if I'm already familiar with the words, and I can "chat" to bots to help me use the language in a realistic conversation. At the top of the lessons page is your fluency in the language, and though it doesn't seem very accurate, it's a great motivator. I recommend Duolingo to anyone who wants some extra support learning a new language for free, as this app offers just that! ¡Muchas gracias Duolingo!
  • New Health “feature” blocks me from using it

I loved using Duolingo to learn Japanese. Decided to tackle Russian. This module is horrible. Unlike the Japanese which taught the kana one character at a time, and then taught only words containing those characters, the Russian module teaches Cyrillic whole sentences at a time and you have to guess which character makes which sound. It’s impossible to not mess up most of the exercises. But to make matters worse, having survived the first lesson, the new “health feature” won’t let me continue to the next unless I spend 10 minutes reviewing what I’ve just learned and reviewed. Constantly reviewing the same content which is not presented in a new way is not helpful. So many sentences e.g. “This is not my motor.” are pointless and stupid. You’ve just made your previously fun tool, into a piece of crap. I want my money back. (Yes, I just signed up for 6 months. And now I can’t use it unless I waste 15 minutes learning to write the word motor again.)
  • Where is Arabic?

I find it concerning that Arabic is still not listed as a course on Duolingo. With 420 million speakers, it is a critical language to learn. It’s hard to believe that an invented language, Esperanto, is recognized on this application, and not Arabic.

Easy to use, convenient, well built. Almost a must for those wanting to learn another language.
  • Get Rid of Health

Used duolingo previously and it was great, 5 stars. However, they implemented "health" now which completely ruins the learning process. I understand wanting to monetize a great app, but either keep it free with ads or make users pay for it. Don't advertise it as free when now it's turned into just another awful freemium app.

Very good app for language learners! Here’s a suggestion for the next added language: Arabic :)
